Historical Background Of DIT

Established through a parliamentary act in 1997, commonly referred to as “the DIT Act No 6 of 1997,” the inception of the Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology (DIT) marked the transition from the Dar es Salaam Technical College, an institution that had been imparting technical education in Tanzania since 1957. The Dar es Salaam Technical Institute was originally conceived to offer specialized training across the nation.

Having undergone a transformation in 1962 that led to its evolution into the Dar es Salaam Technical College (DTC), the institution’s history saw it expand its scope to encompass technical secondary school programs and training for Technical Assistants.

Today, the Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology operates across three campuses: the Main Campus located in Dar es Salaam, the Mwanza Campus situated in the Mwanza Region, and the Myunga Campus located in the Songwe Region. Delivering a diverse range of around twenty-nine applied scientific, engineering, and professional training programs, the institute awards qualifications spanning from Basic Technical Certificates to Ordinary Diplomas, Bachelor of Engineering, Bachelor of Technology, and Master’s Degrees.
